PLDT Internet Outage - June 13, 2008
We are the first to report it! Beating all news organizations in Bacolod and in Manila.
Late last month, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company's (PLDT) Internet cables to the Visayas and Mindanao was shutdown due to a fiber cut. Once again, on Friday, June 13, 2008, approximately 8:30 PM, Manila time, PLDT experienced another outage, similar to what occurred last month.
The issue was repaired Saturday, June 14, 2008 approximately 5:30 AM. We called PLDT's 24x7 Manila Help Desk and they commented to Bacolod Beat that there were two fiber cuts, one in Iloilo and one in Cebu.
This outage effectively shutdown all PLDT Internet customers, both residential and business in Bacolod.
An annoyance to call centers
While most businesses were closed during the outage, there were major businesses directly impacted by the outage. The three main call centers in Bacolod: Convergys, Teleperformance, and TeleTech, all were affected along with smaller call centers.

Bacolod, Philippines/BACOLOD BEAT/June 12, 2008 -- Bacolod police were put on alert today as the city celebrated the Philippines Independence Day.
A brief history
The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in the Philippines, where Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo (later to become the Philippines' first Republican President) proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonial rule of Spain after the latter was defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
100 years away from Spain
On June 12, 1998, the nation celebrated its centennial year of Independence from Spain. The celebrations were held simultaneously nationwide by then President Fidel V. Ramos and Filipino communities worldwide. A commission was established for the said event, the National Centennial Commission headed by former Vice President Salvador Laurel presided all events around the country. One of the major projects of the commission was the Expo Pilipino, a grand showcase of the Philippines' growth as a nation for the last 100 years, located in the Clark Special Economic Zone (formerly Clark Air Base) in Angeles City, Pampanga.
